Dear America,

I write to you today in a state of profound disbelief and horror. Yesterday, July 13, 2024, an attempt was made on the life of former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

I feel the pain and fear that many Americans are experiencing right now, regardless of their political beliefs. We all yearn for safety, respect, and a sense of community.

My heart goes out to President Trump and his family. I wish him a speedy recovery and stand in solidarity with him against such acts of extremism. His defiant fist pump as he was rushed off stage is a powerful image, symbolizing resilience in the face of violence.

As I write this, my mind is reeling from the recent news and the cacophony of voices across social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and X. The calls for unity clash with vitriolic posts cheering on violence and conspiracy theories about political figures. This is a critical moment for our nation, one where the stakes couldn't be higher. We must stand together to denounce this violent act.

There's no excuse for violence in our politics. Open debates and elections remain the cornerstone of our democracy, allowing for dialogue and dissent without brutality. An attempt on any leader’s life isn’t just an attack on a person; it’s a blow to the heart of our democratic values, threatening the principles of dialogue, debate, and peaceful resolution that we hold dear.

The dangerous trend of dehumanizing those who disagree with us needs to STOP. Viewing political opponents as evil only deepens the divide. Former President Trump, often a polarizing figure, is not the antichrist. He thrives on hyperbole and division, but we must resist the temptation to see him or his supporters as embodiments of evil.

We can't let political disagreements justify attacks on our fellow Americans. This kind of violence threatens to unravel the very fabric of our society. The specter of political violence still hangs over us, fueled by deep-seated divisions and inflammatory rhetoric.

Our democracy thrives on the ability to advocate for our beliefs through peaceful means. Our democracy thrives on open debates and elections. Our democracy should never thrive on fear and violence.

We can choose to let violence and division define us, or we can reaffirm our commitment to democracy and mutual respect. From the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement, America has faced and overcome deep divisions. This moment calls for the same resilience and commitment to unity.

This moment can either mark the beginning of our decline or a renewal of our dedication to the values that have made our country strong.

In these tough times, let’s remember that our strength as a nation comes from our ability to unite despite our differences. Our democracy’s survival hinges on our collective will to engage in civil discourse, listen to one another, and find common ground. We cannot remain strong if we are torn apart within by hatred and violence.

It’s easy to give in to the anger and frustration that surrounds us. But we must strive to be better. We owe it to our children and grandchildren to create a future where they can disagree without fear and express their beliefs without violence.

Let us come together, not as adversaries, but as fellow Americans, united in our resolve to reject violence and uphold the ideals of our democracy. In this one instance, our words are useless. We must act on our collective will and answer the question:

What kind of country do we want to leave behind for our descendants?
